Sonakshi Sinha, the talented Bollywood actress, has been garnering widespread praise for her remarkable performance in her debut web series, ‘Dahaad.’ Portraying the role of the tough-as-nails cop Anjali Bhaati on the popular Prime Video show, Sonakshi effortlessly embodies both the physicality and personality of the character, capturing the attention and admiration of audiences. Even two weeks after its release, ‘Dahaad’ continues to amass a significant viewership, further solidifying its success. Recently, Sonakshi took some time to chat with TT about her overwhelming experience.
Reflecting on the past two weeks, Sonakshi reveals, “The number of compliments and the immense love people have shown for the character of Anjali Bhaati have been truly overwhelming. My phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the day ‘Dahaad’ dropped. Actors, directors, friends, and even friends of friends have been calling and messaging me. My father, Shatrughan Sinha, has been forwarding me countless messages from his colleagues.”
The immense popularity and reach of ‘Dahaad’ have left a lasting impact on everyone involved with the project. Sonakshi expresses her joy, saying, “The way the show has broken out and connected with so many people is truly overwhelming. ‘Dahaad’ holds a special place in the hearts of all those associated with it. It was dear to us, and witnessing such incredible success feels unreal. I am relishing every moment of it.”
The long-format nature of a series offers the advantage of developing each character progressively, a luxury that the shorter film format often lacks. Sonakshi appreciates this aspect and emphasizes, “In a series, one has the freedom to explore a character extensively as the show progresses. You can delve into the nuances and the writers have the opportunity to convey their message effectively to the audience. ‘Dahaad’ exemplifies this, as all the characters possess well-crafted arcs, allowing viewers to witness their journey from beginning to end. The show accurately reflects what I envisioned when I read the script, if not more. Credit goes to the brilliant writers who are the real heroes behind this success.”
When asked about her decision to take on the role of Anjali Bhaati, Sonakshi confidently states, “Honestly, there was no reason for me to turn down this show. Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar, the co-creators and co-directors of ‘Dahaad,’ narrated the synopsis to me during a casual meeting over a cup of coffee. They mentioned they would send me the episodes to read, but I immediately expressed my excitement and commitment to be a part of it. The script was beautifully written, and I had always wanted to work with Zoya and Reema. They are incredible creators, and their collaborations have always produced magic. This role was a departure from anything I had done before, and I couldn’t resist saying ‘yes’ to it.”
Sonakshi further adds, “Right from the trailer launch, I had said that I was born to play this role, and I still stand by that statement. It’s fulfilling to hear that you also think I portrayed the character convincingly.”
Delving into her creative experience, Sonakshi shares, “I always find it enjoyable when I get to learn something new for a role. Speaking with a Rajasthani accent was an entirely fresh experience for me. Being a born and raised Mumbaikar, it was challenging, but I embraced it wholeheartedly. We underwent workshops, and all the actors started practicing and conversing in the dialect among ourselves. I am delighted that our efforts paid off because after the screening, many people expressed disbelief that I wasn’t from that region. That compliment meant a lot to me, as authenticity is crucial for a character.”
Sonakshi also revealed, “For this role, I had to learn how to ride a bike, which was something I had never done before.” She proudly exclaims, “I was eagerly waiting for a role that would put me on a bike! I have always had a tomboyish nature since my school days, so I thoroughly enjoyed the process. After practicing for five to six days, I started riding the bike for the show. It was so exhilarating that I ended up buying my own bike, and now I ride it all the time in the streets of Bombay, especially at night when there is less traffic. I absolutely love it!”
Reflecting on the similarities and differences between herself and Anjali Bhaati, Sonakshi shares, “In terms of personality, we are both strong-minded women. Once we set our minds on something, we are determined to achieve it. We believe in equality and that we are as capable as any man out there. We are both go-getters.”
However, Sonakshi acknowledges the divergences, stating, “Apart from these commonalities, there is little else that we share. Our backgrounds, circumstances, and professions in life are completely different. Nevertheless, the shared traits allowed me to portray the character more effectively. It was an incredible experience.”
The premiere of ‘Dahaad’ at Berlinale, one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, marked Sonakshi’s first time attending such an event. She expresses her delight, saying, “I was thrilled that ‘Dahaad’ premiered at Berlinale, which is considered the mother of all film festivals. It was an incredible feeling to be there with our own show. The response we received was phenomenal. We presented only two episodes during the screening, and German viewers approached me, eagerly anticipating the release of the rest of the series. They were captivated by it.”
Sonakshi marvels at the global appeal of ‘Dahaad,’ saying, “Despite its strong Indian and heartland roots, the show managed to resonate with the international audience at Berlinale. They understood the cultural references, and the humor landed perfectly. The show has a universal quality to it. I have been receiving messages praising the series from countries like France and America.”
When asked about her experience working with Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar, Sonakshi gushes, “It was amazing! I only want to be on their set now! They have such unique perspectives and thinking processes. Watching them collaborate and exchange ideas is a true pleasure. They run a seamless production together, creating a respectful environment for everyone involved. They are a well-oiled machine.”
Recalling her initial thoughts about working with two directors, Sonakshi reveals, “When I began working on ‘Dahaad,’ I wondered how it would be with two directors, Reema and Ruchika Oberoi. However, despite their different approaches, everything came together seamlessly in the show. The two directors were completely in sync.”
Sonakshi continues, “Ruchika was particular about what she wanted from me as an actor, while Reema provided complete creative freedom. It was truly beautiful to merge both of their perspectives and create my character. I would love to work with them repeatedly.”
Expressing her admiration for Zoya and Reema’s previous projects, Sonakshi states, “I absolutely love Reema’s ‘Talaash.’ I told her that the first time I met her, and I have watched the film numerous times. As for Zoya, ‘Gully Boy’ was phenomenal. She has consistently delivered exceptional work, and I am a fan of ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ as well.”
Finally, after over a decade in the industry, Sonakshi reflects on her current state of mind as an actor. She reveals, “I need to connect with the characters I portray. They must be strong, powerful, and possess gravitas. My approach to selecting and portraying roles changed with ‘Akira’ in 2016, which was a significant experience for me as an actor. After ‘Akira,’ I stuck to my new approach, although not everything worked out as planned. However, with ‘Dahaad,’ the tremendous response reassures me that I am on the right path.”
